Home to Nuance Communications, brick has designed a truly innovative building and green roof in the heart of Silicon Valley
Mountain View, CA (January 9, 2014) – One of the newest sustainable buildings in Silicon Valley, 899 West Evelyn, is set to open in spring 2014. Located in Mountain View, CA, the new office building is located in the heart of downtown and situated in a regional transit hub. As the future home of Nuance Communications, 899 West Evelyn, which was designed by brick, constructed by Nibbi Brothers, and developed by The Minkoff Group, balances a modern design aesthetic within the LEED Platinum standard.
Located in the historic Castro Street corridor of downtown Mountain View, 899 West Evelyn features a distinctive roof top garden, allowing occupants to easily survey the center of downtown and surrounding area. The 13,000-square-foot roof garden consists of a cutting-edge steel and wood canopy structure, pre-cast concrete pedestal pavers, wood decking, undulating lawn, outdoor seating areas, and a bocce court. The roof top garden is abundant with water-efficient landscaping, which, in addition to providing visual and experiential benefits also acts as the building’s storm water filtration system. The roof is also home to solar panels that provide the building’s hot water.
899 West Evelyn features a high performance glass curtain wall facade that utilizes operable windows for passive ventilation and a low-e coating. The distinctive feature of the curtain wall comes from the use of insulated glazing panels that encapsulate a horizontal wood lattice made from sustainably harvested trees. These glazing panels provide a distinctive warm appearance from the wood lattice and they also provide a functional benefit by further reducing solar infiltration and heat gain, which in combination with the other design features of the curtain wall contributes to overall LEED platinum performance levels of the building.
Other sustainable features throughout the building include low VOC products, ample secured bike storage with changing rooms, and 3 electric vehicle charging stations within a small subterranean parking lot that was purposefully limited to a mere 33 total car spaces since the building is only 200 yards away from the nearest Castro Street station.
