Boosted by robust tech industry activity in San Francisco and Silicon Valley the combined Bay Area’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 5.8% in 2015, which is more than double the national rate of 2.5% and the highest of major gateway regions. Separately, both the San Francisco and Silicon Valley metros are a powerhouse of economic activity and were among the fastest growing major metros in the nation. By dollar value of goods and services, the combined value of $721 billion would place the Bay Area sixth in economic activity among the top ten states, highlighting its place as an integral part of the U.S. economy.
