Colliers International Recruits Industry Veteran Joseph Vargas to Take Active Role in Greater Los Angeles Region

Senior Managing Director to Serve as Market Leader for Multiple Southern California Markets

LOS ANGELES – June 12, 2017 – Colliers International has recruited Joseph M. Vargas, one of the industry’s most respected, experienced and recognizable senior executives, to the position of Senior Managing Director for its Greater Los Angeles Region. In his new role, Vargas will serve as the firm’s market leader for four key markets in the region.

Vargas will be responsible for driving the company’s strategic growth in this major U.S. market, focusing on new business and talent acquisition and retention. This strategic addition is another step forward in the firm’s ambitious five-year plan to double the company by 2020.

“Joe brings to Colliers both the tangible management skills necessary to oversee the diverse range of brokers and market sectors we serve, as well as the intangible skills to motivate, coach and bring out the best in our expanding number of professionals,” said Colliers Executive Managing Director Hans Mumper, regional market leader for Greater Los Angeles. “I’ve worked with him both as a colleague, and against him as a competitor, and I know firsthand that he is a proven quantity, someone used to competing and winning.”

Mumper was promoted in February to the top regional spot and was responsible for recruiting Vargas to the new position. At the same time, Martin Pupil, former president of the Western Region for Colliers, was elevated to the post of president, US Brokerage Services for Colliers. Pupil remains based in Irvine and Mumper in Los Angeles.

Vargas previously served as the president of Cushman & Wakefield’s West Region and as an executive vice president with Lee & Associates, where he worked to expand that firm’s presence into tier-one markets in the U.S. His new role with Colliers will bring under his purview the day-to-day operations of four key offices – Inland Empire (Ontario), South Bay (El Segundo) City of Commerce and City of Industry.

Vargas, a two-time Olympian and a silver medalist in water polo at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, and a collegiate competitor at UCLA, will be based in the firm’s South Bay office.

“As the nation’s economic engine continues to shift from East to West, we intend to meet the challenges such a change brings by having talented and steadfast leaders in the top executive ranks of all of our regions, especially this one, which, by its sheer size alone, is among our most important,” said Martin Pupil, president, US Brokerage. “Joe’s appointment strengthens our drive toward that objective.”

Vargas, who is active in a variety of civic, professional and charitable organizations, including AIR CRE, where he served a term as president, SIOR, ULI and NAIOP, said he was excited to be directly managing brokers and brokerage operations again, especially at a firm with an increasing number of the industry’s top professionals.

“I’m energized to be returning to my roots in brokerage with this new perspective, where I can focus on driving strategic growth,” said Vargas. “I hope to bring my skills and wisdom to the fore to make them even tougher and stronger and to bring new talent into what has become one of the top brokerage firms regionally, nationally and globally.”
