Former Macy’s Men’s store in historic Union Square to become mixed-use retail, workplace, and rooftop restaurant destination
SAN FRANCISCO (February 28, 2019) — Project developer Blatteis & Schnur and Plant Construction, with global design firm Gensler, announced today the start of construction on a major repositioning of the approximately 250,000-square-foot former Macy’s Men’s store into a vibrant, mixed-use destination at the entrance to Union Square. The project is scheduled to be open for the 2020 holiday season.
Key to the transformational experience of 100 Stockton is a change in program to allow for multi-tenant upscale retail, creative offices, and an 11,000-square-foot rooftop restaurant— all which drive integration of the building to the streetscape and create the varied and unique experience desired by today’s consumer. A new glass and terracotta brick exterior wall provides transparency to interior activities, further establishing that vital connection between the retailer and the community.
“We are more than thrilled to be a part of the team that will deliver a new kind of experience for Union Square,” says Dan Blatteis, Co-Chairman of Blatteis & Schnur. “This significant building, in such an iconic location, was well positioned to evolve and become a truly world-class destination. Through an incredible design and prestigious leasing, 100 Stockton will connect people who are looking for an exceptional experience, whether it’s to shop, dine, or work.”
Typical of early 1970s buildings, all floors were dedicated to a single retail tenant, a model that is no longer desirable to commercial building owners. In addition, as an inwardly-oriented department store the existing architecture lacked continuity with the pedestrian-oriented Union Square architectural fabric. This repositioning and renovation will transform the building by activating the façade across all levels, restoring a relationship with the street and the pedestrian.
With Union Square retailers generating a significant percentage of the city’s consumer goods sales tax receipts, preservation of retail space is vital in an age of rising e-commerce. A new approach to building repositioning is represented with 100 Stockton where leasing will include office and hospitality, in addition to dedicated floors of destination retail and retail services that will preserve the fabric of Union Square.
To maintain relevance to the Union Square historic district, 100 Stockton will utilize a locally crafted terracotta brick for the exterior wall system. It will frame the retail spaces and be gradated as it is installed to lead the eye up and make the exterior dynamic and vibrant. The bricks will be modern in shape and varying in size to interpret an historical element into a modern context—a final textured pattern that will enliven the storefronts and create a continuous rhythm of retail along the entire ground floor.About Blatteis & Schnur, Inc.
