County Board of Supervisors Approves Project Aptos Village to Become Reality

SAN JOSE, CA, Oct 10, 2012 – San Jose based Barry Swenson Builder (BSB), a division of Green Valley Corporation, announced Wednesday its long planned Aptos Village project has moved forward upon unanimous approval by the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors. The new Aptos Village will be a town center style mixed-use urban infill project including residential, commercial, a village green and new county park. The 11.5 acre site is along Soquel Avenue at Trout Gulch, gateway to Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.

“New homes and commercial space will strengthen the local market, while the site layout and amenities promote walking, biking, and community events,” says BSB development project manager Mary Gourlay. “It’s really going to be a beautiful addition to the region, and we’re all excited that the community itself will advocate healthy lifestyles.” The new 63 residential units include 6 semi-detached single family homes, 11 townhomes and 46 urban apartments and condos above retail. BSB, the general contractor for this project, will also build 488 parking stalls and over 80 bicycle stalls to accommodate residents, retail shoppers and recreational users.

Santa Cruz County Supervisor Ellen Pirie has been a vocal advocate for Aptos Village and the project as the proposal highlights top priorities of her district office. “Preservation of our neighborhoods and open space, as well as adoption of an update to the Aptos Village Plan to guide future development are two major issues for my office and constituents,” says Supervisor Pirie. “I’m thrilled to give BSB the green light for this development, knowing it’s what the community wants.” Additional public benefits include a new county park; adaptive reuse of Historic Hihn Apple Barn; new public streets that feature rain gardens, canopy trees, and lighting and new signage and kiosk for Forest of Nisene Marks State Park.
