SMPS SF: Diversity & Inclusion Workshop

Please join us in a members only interactive Q&A workshop focused on creating capacity for change by promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the AEC industry and identifying resources that will remove barriers to change.
The workshop will include brainstorming, sharing, and prioritizing ideas around improving culture at our respective firms and in the AEC industry as it relates to DEI. Our goal is to leave the meeting with information from which we can explore this topic in greater depth.
Hosting this workshop will be SMPS SFBAC’s Diversity & Inclusion Advisor, Kim Pipkin, and SMPS At-Large Director, Kim Thompkins, FSMPS, CPSM.
Kim Pipkin established Black Kite Consulting in 2019 to provide to strategic marketing and business development consulting services for companies in the built environment. She has worked in the AEC industry for more than 25 years with architects, engineers and construction professionals serving both public and private clientele. An expertise in contract compliance and DEI practices, Kim, is passionate about bridging the gap between minority and women-owned consultants and large prime firms.
Kim is the SMPS SFBAC Diversity & Inclusion Advisor and was recently appointed to the SMPS Society Diversity & Inclusion Task Force. She is also a member of CREW San Francisco and a board member for CinnamonGirl, Inc., a non-profit based in Oakland. Currently, Kim is on the Town of San Anselmo’s Economic Development Committee and a former Planning Commissioner. Kim attended the College of Environmental Design graduate architecture program at UC Berkeley and has an MBA in Marketing from St. Mary’s College, Moraga.
Kim Thompkins, FSMPS, CPSM is the Director of Proposals for Cumming, a multi-faceted consulting firm specializing in project and cost management services. Kim manages the proposal team and serves as the primary proposal contact for the company. Kim has been marketing professional services in the AEC industry for 30 years. She has been instrumental in coaching and mentoring numerous marketing professionals to meet their optimum performance level.
Kim is currently serving as At-Large Director on the SMPS Society Board of Directors. She is a Past President of SMPS Atlanta and serves on the Chapter’s Past President’s Council and Membership Committee. Kim earned the Society’s Certified Professional Services Marketer (CPSM) designation in 2005 and was elevated to Fellow in 2019. Kim has co-presented “Making A Case for Certification” at numerous SMPS regional conferences. Recently, she wrote an article for the Marketer entitled “A Seat at the Table”. Kim received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from San Jose State University.
