Fremont City Council Selects Raj Salwan as Vice Mayor

At its regularly scheduled City Council meeting on November 20, 2018, the Fremont City Council selected Councilmember Raj Salwan to serve as its Vice Mayor for a one-year term.

Vice Mayor Salwan grew up in Fremont and attended Fremont public schools. He has been serving in city government for nearly 13 years. Prior to being elected to the Fremont City Council in 2016, Mr. Salwan served on the City’s Human Relations Commission and Planning Commission. He was appointed to the Human Relations Commission on June 28, 2005 and served until January 2011. Mr. Salwan was appointed to the Planning Commission on January 25, 2011. He served as a Planning Commissioner until he was appointed to fill a vacant seat on the City Council on January 14, 2013. The Council appointment ended in December 2014. Mr. Salwan was once again appointed to the Planning Commission January 13, 2015 through December 2016. Mr. Salwan was elected to his current seat at the November 2016 election. He will be eligible for re-election in 2020.

Vice Mayor Salwan earned a Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from University of California, Irvine, and has a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Tuskegee University College of Veterinary Medicine.

The Vice Mayor position is rotated among elected Fremont Councilmembers. Councilmember Vinnie Bacon was Fremont’s previous Vice Mayor.
