SAN FRANCISCO – July 9, 2013 – Crystal Barriscale, AIA, AICP, LEED AP BD+C, has been named to serve on a task force of nationally recognized urban design experts who will convene this week to help create a new advanced specialty certification in urban design for The American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP).
Barriscale is based in San Francisco and serves as HKS’s regional director of urban design. She is one of a dozen individuals invited by the AICP to join the task force, made up of urban planning professionals from the architecture and academic sectors throughout the U.S., including firms SOM, Perkins+Will, and higher learning institutions such as Georgia Tech, the University of California at Berkeley, and the University of Kansas.
The task force will assemble in Baltimore July 12-14 to create the test parameters and certificate content, focusing its effort on developing and writing the certification exam. The new certification exam will measure a candidate’s knowledge of the urban systems of land use and building patterns, streetscapes and the public realm, transit, and sustainability-for both environmental and social equity- as well as design and implementation tools.
Barriscale earned an MS in architecture and urban design at Columbia University, and has been honored with several national planning awards. She collaborates with Randy Morton, director of the HKS Urban Design Studio in New York.
The AICP is the American Planning Association’s (APA) professional institute, providing recognized leadership nationwide in the certification of professional planners, ethics, professional development, planning education, and the standards of planning practice.
