San Carlos, CA – Public Works Director Jay Walter announced that he will be retiring effective Friday, December 22, 2017.

Jay was hired by the City of San Carlos as Public Works Director in 2012 after a lengthy search for the right person to fill this important position. Previously, Jay was the Public Works Director at the City of San Luis Obispo for 8 years and prior to that was with Caltrans for 20 years in a number of roles, culminating as the District Director in San Luis Obispo.

While with the City of San Carlos, Jay was instrumental in accomplishing a number of important Capital Improvement Program projects for our community, including: the remodeling of the Adult Community Center; the renovation of Crestview Park; a number of projects to reduce flooding; and the preparation of a number of plans to guide us into the future.

Also during his tenure with the City of San Carlos, Jay was involved with a number of professional organizations, including the League of California Cities Public Works Officers Department, where is he currently its President. Throughout his time in San Carlos, Jay built strong relationships for the City with other local agencies and regional organizations that will continue to benefit our community long after his departure.

Throughout his time with San Carlos, Jay has provided the City with strong leadership and expert engineering advice. City Manager Jeff Maltbie said, “We are very grateful for the sacrifices Jay has made – being away from his home and family – while serving San Carlos. I always said that every year Jay was with us was a gift to this community. His exceptional engineering skills, vast experience and positive and helpful attitude will be missed tremendously. It is going to be very hard to replace Jay, and we’ve started the recruitment process in hopes that someone can be found to fill the void left with his retirement.”
