SAN JOSE, Calif., Dec. 11, 2011 – The Santa Clara County REALTORS® Foundation raised and donated more than $11,000 to Katherine R. Smith Elementary School in San Jose to help purchase school supplies.
The Foundation – the charitable arm of the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS® – organized a pumpkin auction to raise funds for the school. Members of the Association responded enthusiastically and gave thousands of dollars within hours.
Katherine R. Smith is honored as a California Distinguished School and a National Blue Ribbon School for its achievements, but the school and its students face tough challenges. Sixty-five percent of the students are from “socioeconomic disadvantaged” families, meaning their household income falls below the poverty line and their parents did not finish high school. Fifty-three percent of the students are English learners. The majority of the students are either Hispanic (64 percent) or Asian (23 percent).
“REALTORS® are deeply committed to our community, and we feel obligated to help give our local children an opportunity to achieve, regardless of the socioeconomic status of their family,” said Barbara Lymberis, President of the Santa Clara County Association of REALTORS®. “The rapid response from our members shows that education is an issue near and dear to their hearts.”
