SCB Augments Growing Interior Design Practice with Strategic Hire Christopher Liu Rejoins the Firm as Design Director of Interiors

CHICAGO —  Award-winning architecture, interior design, and planning firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz (SCB) is pleased to announce that Christopher Liu has joined the firm as a Design Director of Interiors in its Chicago office. With nearly thirty years of experience, Liu has earned a reputation as a leader in the commercial design field, having worked on high-profile projects around the world.

Over the years, Liu’s work has served prestigious law firms as well as internationally recognized financial and corporate clientele, including Seyfarth Shaw, Leo Burnett, Bank of America, LaSalle National Bank (acquired in 2007 by Bank of America), Ernst and Young, Discover, and Goldman Sachs, as well as Chicago-based companies and organizations like McDonald’s and The Joyce Foundation.

Liu’s hire at SCB represents a homecoming for the designer, who was previously with the firm from 2003 – 2007. During that time, he led the design of the Sara Lee headquarters and the law offices of Barack Ferrazzano Kirschbaum and Nagelberg, among other large and complex projects.

“One of Chris’ greatest strengths is that he works across sectors and industries, which means he can apply best practices and inspiration across project types. He has a rare flexibility of vision, which brings tremendous value to his work,” says Sheyla Conforte, SCB Principal overseeing the firm’s Interior Design practice.

Liu’s previous tenure at the firm overlapped with that of Conforte, whose leadership vision he credits with spurring the group’s growth.

“Over the past several years, I’ve admired what has been happening at SCB Interiors and the talented group that has come together under new leadership,” Liu states. “The team is dynamic, entrepreneurial and collaborative —a combination that I believe has brought them their success and is very much in line with how I work best. I’m excited to rejoin SCB and to add to the diversity of the team’s experience.”

Liu’s design philosophy focuses on ensuring that the design of a space represents the image, identity, and culture of the client.

“I approach each project having no preconceived notions or pre-existing ideas,” says Liu. “It’s about having an open dialogue and developing a deep connection with each client to learn who they are, recognize their legacy, and understand where they want to be in the future —and then expressing all those details in the design of the space.”

Liu will work in tandem with fellow Design Director of Interiors Christopher Keller, as well as the San Francisco Interior Design Studio and SCB’s Interior Design group leadership to augment a team that has grown from six to 35 staff members in under five years. The group’s success has led to a growing body of diverse work for Fortune 100 and 500 clients, and the dual team of Liu and Keller will provide the flexibility to continue that momentum.

A seasoned designer with nearly three decades of experience, Liu has worked with such firms as SOM, HOK, VOA, and most recently Wright Heerema Architects. Liu holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design from the University of Michigan. He has been the recipient of numerous design awards, including recognition by the American Institute of Architects and Interior Design Magazine, and has contributed to a number of articles in leading real estate and industry publications.
