Swenson Breaks Ground on New, Mixed-Use Buildings in San Jose’s Japantown

Joint venture includes apartments, retail, and community amenities

SAN JOSE, CA (January 31, 2019) – SWENSON, Shea Properties, and Ivanhoé Cambridge recently completed a groundbreaking ceremony to kickoff construction on their latest joint venture, a new mixed-use project in San Jose’s Japantown neighborhood. The project brings to realization a decade of coordination and cooperation between the City of San Jose, local groups, and the developer. With just three remaining Japantowns in the country, San Jose’s Japantown is an important part of the community and filled with a vibrant history dating back centuries.

The 3.79-acre project will include Facet—a two-building, 518-unit apartment community—and Sixth and Jackson—a 19,000-square-foot retail space with restaurants, shops, and services. A new community park that reflects the rich history of the area will be situated between the structures.

The two-building apartment community will be built by SWENSON, the storied San Jose-based, fourth-generation real estate company with an unparalleled level of design experience and a reputation for developing quality properties. “Japantown is really an extension of downtown San Jose,” says SWENSON president Case Swenson. “It’s a clean, friendly community full of locally-owned restaurants and boutique shops and we’re excited to build this really cool project in such an awesome neighborhood.”

Facet’s apartment homes will feature luxury units ranging from 512-square foot studios to 1,537-square foot three-bedroom units. They will include finishes such as stainless appliances, full-size washer and dryers, quartz counter tops, smart-home technology, as well as other high-end fixtures throughout the unit.

Additionally, Facet will offer top-of-the-market amenities. Each building will feature its own set of unique conveniences including but not limited to a swimming pool/spa, poolside BBQ grills, outdoor gaming areas, a fitness room, spacious indoor kitchen/lounges, a rooftop deck, a pet spa, and a large dog-run area. The north building will offer additional amenities providing flexible work options including individual work pods, collaborative work lounges, and multimedia rooms. In contrast, the south building will offer additional amenities for an active lifestyle including large gym-quality fitness areas, as well as shopping and dining options on the ground level.

Located along North Sixth and North Seventh Streets, between Jackson and East Taylor Streets, Facet is scheduled to begin leasing in Spring 2021 The retail shops at Sixth and Jackson are scheduled to open at that same time.

Construction of the project is expected to be completed in fall 2020 with a grand opening scheduled for that October.
