Affordable Housing for Veterans Reaches Important Construction Milestone
Millbrae, CA – Today, The Core Companies gathered with community leaders to celebrate the structural completion known as “topping out” of The Rollins, located within walking distance of the Millbrae BART station, at 200 Rollins Road. The project will provide 80 new affordable homes including 18 homes dedicated for veterans with Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing vouchers. It is part of a larger mixed-use, transit-oriented development known as Gateway at Millbrae Station.
The Rollins is a unique public-private partnership led by the Core Companies with Republic Urban, the County of San Mateo, and the City of Millbrae. The Rollins was one of the first Affordable Housing and Sustainable Communities (AHSC) funded projects in San Mateo County and received nearly $12 million from the State of California.
“The Core Companies is proud to provide deeply affordable homes to so many deserving veterans who served our country,” said Chris Neale, President of The Core Companies. “We are thankful to our many partners and community leaders who helped commemorate this important construction milestone with us. We now look forward to welcoming residents to The Rollins this Summer.”
Several elected officials were on hand to commemorate the Topping Out ceremony including City of Millbrae Mayor Anne Schneider, San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine, and BART Director John McPartland.
“The addition of high density, affordable and veteran-specific housing adjacent to mass transit represents a unique opportunity,” said Supervisor Dave Pine. “This development will be a great benefit to our communities, especially our veterans in need.”
Gateway at Millbrae Station is being constructed as a joint venture between Blach Construction and Cahill Contractors, LLC. Construction on The Rollins is anticipated to be completed and welcome its first residents in June 2022.
“Gateway at Millbrae Station, and in particular The Rollins, is a truly community-defining project that will enable incredible opportunities for the City of Millbrae and its residents,” said Blach Construction Vice President James Woodbury. “Our efforts on this complex undertaking have been incredibly rewarding both from a technical construction standpoint, and more importantly, in knowing that we are delivering affordable and essential housing options to Veterans and others in need.”
