The Nueva School Closes Escrow on New Campus at Bay Meadows

SAN MATEO, Calif. – January 31, 2012 – The Nueva School announced today that it formally has acquired land and will begin construction this spring for its new high school at Bay Meadows in San Mateo.

The Nueva School is launching a new high school to complement its existing preK-8th grade campus in Hillsborough.

The school received Site Plan and Architectural Review (SPAR) approval from the City of San Mateo Planning Commission on December 11, 2012. Designed by architectural firm Leddy Maytum Stacy Architects, the high school will be adjacent to the new 12-acre public park on the northern side of the Bay Meadows development. The Nueva School expects to open the Bay Meadows campus in fall 2014. The high school will commence operations this fall in temporary facilities at the College of San Mateo.

Bay Meadows, site of a former thoroughbred racetrack, is a joint venture of Stockbridge Capital Group and Wilson Meany. Residential homes are currently under construction. The Bay Meadows Welcome Center is slated to open this spring, with home sales launching shortly thereafter.

Ideally located on one of the most transportation-accessible sites on the Peninsula, Bay Meadows is directly adjacent to the Caltrain Hillsdale Station and is served by SamTrans bus service, allowing an opportunity for students, faculty, staff and visitors to take public transportation directly to school.

With The Nueva School’s innovative approach to education, opportunities for student interaction with Bay Meadows abound. The Nueva School’s student internship programs will be bolstered by potential collaborations with the future commercial tenants located at Bay Meadows Station, the largest new, LEED Gold, Class A development on the San Francisco Peninsula. In addition, an extraordinary, interpretive landscape will extend from the western edge of the campus into the adjacent park, modeling San Mateo’s diverse ecologies – from redwood forests to bay wetlands – providing abundant opportunities for observation, appreciation, research and stewardship. The school campus will include a variety of outdoor spaces, such as contemplative study areas, inviting activity courts and inspiring and educational gardens, further enhancing daily connections to the design of Bay Meadows and the community of San Mateo.

Bay Meadows: Comprehensive Sustainability

Bay Meadows is a transportation-centered pedestrian village mid-way between San Francisco and Silicon Valley, designed with state-of-the-art buildings redefining a new walkable urbanism. As a TOD, Bay Meadows’ sustainable initiatives will allow residents to dramatically reduce their number of car trips. In addition, construction and design are as energy-efficient as possible by minimizing fossil-fuel consumption, recycling of concrete and asphalt, replanting trees, employing advanced storm-water systems and using sustainable materials.
