Technology-driven real estate firm to take over 12,700-square-foot space for San Francisco Headquarters

SAN FRANCISCO (October 20, 2016) – Jamestown, L.P., the owner of Ghirardelli Square, a historic landmark, is pleased to announce that Compass, a technology-driven real estate platform, will lease a ground floor space to serve as its San Francisco headquarters. The addition of Compass adds a new dimension to the roster of tenants, and furthers Jamestown’s commitment to transforming Ghirardelli Square into a hub for locals and Bay Area residents.

Compass’ luxury real estate platform utilizes best-in-class technology to create a seamless and intelligent home buying, selling, and renting experience. Combining the country’s top agents, proprietary market insights, and integrated mobile and web technologies, Compass is developing the future of real estate decision-making. The firm has established unprecedented market share across eight luxury markets around the country, and seeks to bring a more sophisticated real estate experience through the country’s leading agents and proprietary technology to Bay Area customers. Compass’ San Francisco team features the most productive agents from four top brokerages in the area – signaling a dominant position in the market from its inception.

“San Francisco is one of the leading real estate markets in the world, and we are extremely proud to continue our journey here, particularly in such a renowned destination like Ghirardelli Square,” said Robert Reffkin, founder & CEO of Compass. “As a Bay Area native, I’m excited to put down roots in such a historic part of the city. We can’t wait to become a part of the community.”

The firm will occupy a 12,783-square-foot space at Ghirardelli Square, located at the corner of Beach and Polk at 891 Beach Street, and will be the future workspace of over 125 Compass agents and employees. The vast space boasts high ceilings and 14-foot windows with iconic views of Aquatic Park, Alcatraz, and Angel Island.

“Compass’s technology-driven real estate business will bring a dynamic environment back to the Square and give locals access to a best-in-class team to help find the right home in the Bay Area,” said Michael Phillips, Jamestown.

For more than 30 years, Jamestown has built a reputation for stewardship of landmark properties on the east and west coasts of the United States. Iconic and beloved places such as New York City’s Chelsea Market, San Francisco’s Ghirardelli Square, Boston’s Newbury Collection, and Malibu Village, among many others, make up the Jamestown portfolio.

About Ghirardelli Square
An iconic historic landmark steeped in the history of San Francisco, the reimagined Ghirardelli Square is a vibrant urban destination offering an exciting variety of creatively-inspired boutiques, notable restaurants, engaging activities, and seasonal events appealing to hip local residents and area visitors. Boasting unparalleled panoramic views of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge and cable cars from its waterfront location at Beach & Larkin, Ghirardelli Square dates back to the mid-1800s, when it served as the original site of the Ghirardelli family’s chocolate, cocoa, mustard and box factories.

Jamestown purchased Ghirardelli Square in 2013 and has since been working to reinstate local significance to the historic global destination and strengthen its neighborhood influence in San Francisco. Jonathan Waxman’s restaurant concept joins more than 20 retailers in the space, purveying everything from local coffee and art to Northern California artisanal goods, gifts, fashion, wine and French baked delicacies. Following these recent updates, Ghirardelli Square has reemerged as one of San Francisco’s hottest new lifestyle destinations.

The Square is also an epicenter for annual community and national events such as Uncorked Wine Festival, Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival and the Tree Lighting Ceremony. Purchased by Domingo Ghirardelli in 1893, the Square was built to headquarter the original Ghirardelli Chocolate Company. In 1982, the Square was added to the National Historic Register.
