REDWOOD CITY, November 11, 2019: McCarthy Building Companies (McCarthy), a national design-build general contractor, in collaboration with HGA Architects & Engineers (HGA), an integrated architecture, engineering and planning firm, and the San Mateo County Community College District (SMCCCD) announces the completion of the new Science & Technology Building at Cañada College.
“The development of the new Science & Technology Building was conceived from a shared vision between all parties,” said José Nuñez, Vice Chancellor of Facilities Planning, Maintenance, & Operations at SMCCCD. “By putting student needs first, we were able to look at the particulars of each department with a close eye and incorporate features that enhance student learning. With the project team all in alignment on goals, the streamlined process made it so that the building came in ahead of schedule and under the original budget and allowed our students to get the most use out of the building as possible.”
With an emphasis on collaborative learning, the new 50,000-square-foot, three-story Science & Technology Building provides a world-class instructional facility for mathematics, lab sciences and technology and features modern, flexible classrooms, laboratories and faculty offices for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education. Supporting the philosophy that learning happens everywhere, the new facility features an indoor/outdoor “learning commons” with an enhanced plaza, creating a functional outdoor gathering space for the campus community. In addition, the building is Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certified and Net Zero Energy-ready to support student academic success.
Delivering the project two semesters ahead of schedule, the team leveraged the design-build approach to bring an extended engineering team onboard early in the process. From the exterior envelope team to interiors and MEP systems, the integrated crew engaged with the College’s facilities and faculty to deliver an energy efficient new building with an eye on California’s 2030 energy goals. In addition, the project was enrolled in the California Division of State Architect’s (DSA) formal collaborative process (CP), an alternative to the traditional plan review process that engages DSA early in the design process with the district and design team, continuing through plan review and approval.Incorporating both the design-build and CP elements allowed the team to move in and out of DSA in four months, an accelerated rate compared to the average time of one year.
“The new Science & Technology Building is a shining example of what true collaboration and trust can achieve with a design-build delivery,” said Jeff Ivey, Project Manager with McCarthy. “By the District consciously prioritizing teamwork and placing their faith in our partnership, the team was able to spend significant time in the design phase and ultimately deliver the project much earlier than anticipated. The end product is a testament of the dedication and commitment by the entire team to providing a state-of-the-art facility that will serve Cañada’s students for years to come.”
