Located on Oracle’s Headquarters in Redwood City, Design Tech High School was designed by DES Architects + Engineers and earned the 2018 Green Building Award from SSMC and AIA SMC
Redwood City, CA – DES Architects + Engineers, a multi-disciplinary design firm, is excited to announce that Design Tech High School has been awarded the Green Building Award at Sustainable San Mateo County’s 2018 Sustainability Awards. The annual awards event raises awareness of sustainability in the community and recognizes projects and people that are working to make the region more sustainable.
Working closely with the school, Oracle, the Oracle Education Foundation and XL Construction, DES Architects + Engineers designed the 550-student facility to achieve LEED Gold certification. The new 64,000-square-foot building is the charter school’s first permanent home, and the first high school located on a tech company campus.
“Thanks to the direction we received from students and community members, sustainability was a guiding principle for the design of the new facility,” said Dawn Jedkins, Associate Principal at DES Architects + Engineers. “We’re thrilled that d.tech is being recognized with a green building award.”
The project converts an underutilized parcel—previously containing an asphalt parking lot and a manicured lawn—into a sustainable school while also providing recreation space for the adjacent community. Tucked between a tidal marsh and the Oracle Conference Center, the new facility takes a sinuous form that blends naturally with the shape of its site. This helped the project restore 1,000 feet of shoreline and provide two acres of public access. The two-story building is designed for optimum solar orientation with a long east-west axis and an efficient building envelope. During summer afternoons, continuous sun shading on the south-facing facade—including a deep entry canopy—will minimize solar heat gain. In contrast, the north facade has floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize daylighting for the school’s circulation corridors, which span the length of the building on the north side.
Benefiting from its proximity to an existing corporate campus, the project’s footprint and community impact was significantly reduced through the joint use of facilities and transportation infrastructure with Oracle. Specifically, the shared use of Oracle’s Conference Center and Fitness Center enabled the school to build significantly less new square footage compared to a traditional high school. The location also provides access to existing transportation infrastructure including an Oracle Caltrain Shuttle.
