The Team Behind Foreign Cinema and Show Dogs Debut Their Newest Project in San Francisco’s Mid-Market Neighborhood
(SAN FRANCISCO, August 7, 2012)— On the heels of Show Dogs’ 3rd anniversary and as the acclaimed Foreign Cinema restaurant approaches its 13thyear, Chef/Owners Gayle Pirie and John Clark announce the official opening of Machine Coffee & Deli, their second business in San Francisco’s growing Mid-Market neighborhood. In collaboration with Foreign Cinema’s in-house charcutier, Peter Temkin, the menu features several signature sandwiches, with house smoked, handcrafted, natural meats including ham, turkey, pork loin, pastrami and sirloin roast beef, as well as a build-your-own option. Behind the counter, guests will find baristas not only trained in the art of coffee making, but also involved in San Francisco’s local DJ scene, so visitors can expect an eclectic mix of music each day.
Machine Coffee & Deli offers fresh roasted Four Barrel coffee, including pour over, French press, espresso, mocha and iced versions, local teas, and hot cocoa. Sticky Buns, a signature at Foreign Cinema’s brunch, are available for breakfast. Signature sandwiches include “The Axle,” with roast beef, provolone, spicy rabe, and onion jam ($10.50); “The Roaster,” a classic smoked turkey club with smoked bacon, cranberry chutney, and avocado ($10.50);“Drill Press,” a hot house pastrami melt with sauerkraut and 1000 island dressing on rye ($10); “Jigsaw,” with smoked chicken, cilantro, sweet chili aioli, toasted peanuts, and Thai vinaigrette ($10); “Crankshaft,” an albacore tuna melt with house pickles and Shelburne cheddar ($10); and “The Lathe,” with marinated zucchini, olivada, roasted peppers, onions, aioli, and goat cheese ($8). Guests can also create their own sandwich from a large selection of meats, breads and accompaniments, and add classic sides such as French potato salad, spiced carrots, and raw slaw.
As its name implies, Machine Coffee & Deli pays tribute to machine shops, metal workers, and hand forged and cast metal parts reliant on hand to eye precision and calculations – a passion for Owner John Clark. “It’s a bit of a dying trade,” says Clark. “You’ll find a lot of machines and metal in here from the espresso machine to the coffee machine and even the original 1930’s light switchboard from our neighbor, the Warfield Theatre.” The switchboard actually controls the lighting for the deli, and the walls feature recycled wood from the Warfield’s basement sound room.
Machine Coffee & Deli is open for breakfast and lunch seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. The “Machine Deli” pop-up lunch will continue at Laszlo Bar, located adjacent to Foreign Cinema in the Mission District, offering the same signature sandwiches Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
