In 2017, Greystar Development purchased 13.3 acres of land in Santa Clara’s Freedom Circle neighborhood from Intel Corporation with the intent of developing a 1,075-unit mixed-use project. Now, after several years, that project is continuing to move ahead through the permitting process, most recently receiving approval from CEQA.

Located at 3905 Freedom Circle, the project would include the construction of three seven-story buildings consisting of residential use as well as 2,000 square feet of commercial use. In  addition, the project proposes a two-acre public park and 1,413 parking spaces.

The three buildings will center around the public park, which will serve as a place for the community to gather for events as well as use for everyday recreational purposes, project plans state. The park will also link the Freedom Circle neighborhood to the nearby San Tomas Aquino Creek Trail.

The site is bounded by Freedom Circle, Mission College Boulevard, Interstate 101 and the San Tomas Aquino Creek. The project site is also immediately north of Intel’s office campus. In 2017, the property was purchased with no existing structures onsite and was previously intended to be used as additional Intel office space.

While Greystar has been waiting for the project to come to fruition, the Charleston, South Carolina-based developer has had its hands full with a number of projects in the Bay Area. In November of 2020, Redwood City officials approved the company’s 540-unit project at 1601 El Camino Real.

Greystar is also working to complete a nearly 250,000 square foot development at 165 Jefferson Drive. Once complete, the project will include 158 residential units as well as 15,000 square feet of commercial space. The commercial space would be broken into a larger, 13,400 square foot segment, and a smaller 1,600 square foot space, consisting of a cafe, coworking facility and other office uses.
