Truth is Beauty symbolizes the transformation taking place in San Leandro and envisions a world where women are powerful, safe, and free
SAN LEANDRO, CA (October 17, 2016) – On Tuesday, October 18, Westlake Urban and the San Leandro Tech Campus (SLTC) are hosting a grand opening celebration for the newly completed, first phase of SLTC and the inaugural lighting ceremony for Truth is Beauty, artist Marco Cochrane’s iconic, 55-foot tall, steel sculpture of a nude woman who is powerful, safe, and free. The event will take place from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. at SLTC, located at 1600 Alvarado Street, San Leandro, CA. The completion of construction of Phase 1 of SLTC and the lighting of Truth is Beauty are major milestones for San Leandro, a city moving from an industrial past to a technology-focused future.
Speakers include: Mayor Pauline Russo Cutter, City of San Leandro; Nancy O’Malley, District Attorney, Alameda County; Marco Cochrane, Artist and Creator, Truth is Beauty; Julia Whitelaw, Creative Partner, Truth is Beauty; Jenny Linton, President, OSIsoft; Rebecca Saltzman, Director, BART; Deborah Acosta, Chief Innovation Officer, City of San Leandro Gaye Quinn, Managing Director, Westlake Urban; Sunny Tong, Managing Director, Westlake Urban; Student Interns, San Leandro Education Foundation.
“SLTC is the result of more than 10 years of planning to provide the City of San Leandro and the surrounding community with a transit-oriented, state-of-the-art, technology-focused, Class-A business campus that will create jobs and accelerate the city’s transformation,” said Gaye Quinn, Managing Director, Westlake Urban.
“Truth is Beauty is the heart and soul of SLTC,” said Quinn. “This stunning public sculpture is already stimulating a vital conversation about what the world would be like if women were safe. It is our hope that the sculpture will help to foster inclusion and safety and create long-lasting connections with SLTC employees and the community.”
SLTC is a 750,000 square foot, state-of-the-art, LEED Gold, technology-focused campus adjacent to the Downtown San Leandro BART station and AC Transit BRT. SLTC features energy-efficient, cost-saving operational technologies, including smart windows, utility services and HVAC systems, remote monitoring and control, improved security systems, and responsive lighting. SLTC connects directly to Lit San Leandro’s fiber optic network, offering the fastest broadband speeds in the nation. Phase 1 of the campus includes a 132,000 square foot office building, which is fully leased as the world headquarters of OSIsoft; a six-story parking garage; and a new plaza that features Truth is Beauty, Marco Cochrane’s Burning Man-inspired sculpture and SLTC’s public art piece. The sculpture poses a timely, compelling question: “What would the world be like if women were safe?” inviting us to think deeply about how to create environments that are safe, where women are respected, and where communities can thrive.
“The grand opening of Phase 1 of SLTC and the lighting ceremony for Truth is Beauty are major milestones for San Leandro,” said Pauline Cutter, Mayor, City of San Leandro. “The sculpture and the Tech Campus are changing San Leandro’s skyline and creating the foundation for a new, transit-oriented community near San Leandro’s thriving downtown center. The striking building design and the beautiful statue will have a stunning visual impact while also generating renewed awareness that San Leandro is a welcoming place to live, work, and prosper in the 21st Century.”
Cochrane’s intention for Truth is Beauty is to represent self-acceptance and self-love by a woman who is safe, whose voice is clear, and whose power, purpose, and humanity shine. His commitment to art that expresses feminine energy began with a tragic event when he was a young child. At age 7, Marco experienced a deeply traumatic event when his childhood friend of age 9 was raped outside his home. As his artistic expression evolved over the years, he realized his life’s mission: to create art that challenges the viewer to see past the physical form of the female body, to the human being. He hopes to inspire people to take action to end assault and violence against women, and in doing so, create a world where everyone can live fully and thrive.
“It is my intent that the sculpture exudes healing energy and inspires us to take action; to finally say enough is enough,” said Marco Cochrane, Creator of Truth is Beauty.
“I’m really glad Westlake Urban is bringing Truth is Beauty to San Leandro,” said Cochrane “This is a great opportunity to share her message in a community that is taking an active role in creating space where women are fully valued and appreciated.”
“Westlake Urban, as the developer of the San Leandro Tech Campus, is proud to be part of San Leandro’s transformation from an industrial city to a center of technology and innovation,” said Sunny Tong, managing director, Westlake Urban. The site, formerly occupied by a Del Monte cannery, is a “perfect illustration of San Leandro’s emergence as the newest Bay Area powerhouse with the fastest broadband speeds in the nation,” he said.
