Project included significant upgrades to world-renowned dojo, Uchida Hall
SAN JOSÉ, Calif. (Dec. 4, 2015) – Sundt Construction, Inc. (www.sundt.com) recently completed significant upgrades to San José State University’s historic Spartan Complex, home to Yoshihiro Uchida Hall, one of the most renowned dojos in the country, producing numerous national and international judo champions.
In addition to Uchida Hall, the 157,000-square-foot group of buildings houses the school’s athletic facilities, kinesiology department, natatorium, dance studio and performance space, and humanities and the arts faculty offices.
The $55 million project, funded by the State of California, was part of a statewide effort to bring older buildings in the university system up to seismic code. The improvements involved renovating existing classrooms and offices, as well as upgrading the complex’s gymnasium, natatorium, dance and judo studios, weight and locker rooms, and mechanical spaces. The project also included the addition of a 155-seat auditorium-style classroom, lobby and two-story office wing, expanding the complex by 5,600 square feet.
The Spartan Complex includes Uchida Hall, Uchida Hall Annex, Spartan Complex Central and Spartan Complex East – all originally built in phases beginning in 1927.
“We aimed to retain the architectural integrity of the existing building while improving the complex’s aesthetics with color, appropriate exterior skin materials, and mechanical and electrical systems,” said Sundt Project Manager Jason Hughes. “These upgrades not only will improve the safety for students, faculty and staff in the event of an earthquake, but also enhance their daily comfort with the updated operating systems.”
The Spartan Complex project is designed to meet LEED Silver equivalency.
