REDWOOD CITY, Ca. – The Associated General Contractors of America awarded local General Contractor, BNBuilders, first place for the national Construction Safety Excellence Award. At AGC’s 94th Annual Convention in Palm Springs, California, BNBuilders received the top honors for the General Building category with 450,001 – 650,000 man-‐hours.
“This is truly a great honor,” said Brad Bastian, Founder of BNBuilders. “We are very proud of this recognition and testament to what we are doing. It only comes from all the hard work that our people are doing out in the field. And, everyone should get recognized for that hard work.”
AGC’s judging panel reviewed each safety program for employee and management involvement, new and innovative programs, procedures and resources used to promote safety. Over 200 firms submitted applications. Sixty-‐five construction firms advanced to the final selection round from the initial judging that took place in January. BNBuilders was one of three finalists and won first place for their successful safety program.
“Safety is not always perceivable in a company,” said Pete Campbell, safety director for BNBuilders. “Good attitudes, safe behaviors and extra efforts usually go unnoticed when there are not any accidents. Awards like these reinforce to everyone in the company that we are doing the right thing.”
BNBuilders has recorded over two million man-‐hours company-‐wide with zero lost time injuries. The firm’s safety program, Freedom From Danger, has been repeatedly recognized regionally and nationally, winning 2nd place in AGC’s 2009 awards. In 2009 and 2010, BNBuilders received the premier President’s Award from the Construction Employers Association. The principals and safety directors lead the health and safety culture and loss prevention programs, which are founded on the principle that with proper planning all accidents can be prevented.
Statistically, BNBuilders has outperformed the industry with a recordable incident rate and lost-‐time incident rate significantly lower than the national average. BNBuilders’ Bay Area office just completed 2012 with zero recordable injuries. A high-‐level of OSHA training continually sets the firm apart. BNBuilders’ commitment to safety is recognized in their goal of 100% of management, including foremen, superintendents and engineers, completing OSHA 30 training.
“Our people are empowered to be responsible for safety every day,” continued Bastian. “Creating a safe workplace for employees, clients, subcontractors and the general public, is the most important work we do.”
