California Drywall Receives Two National Awards for Bing Concert Hall

San Jose, CA – California Drywall is honored to announce that their Bing Concert Hall project received the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry’s (AWCI) 2014 Excellence in Construction Quality Award and Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) Best of the Best in the country in the Specialty Contracting category.

The AWCI Excellence in Construction Quality Award is a national award that recognizes a wall and ceiling contractor for excellence in construction quality in the face of complicated and challenging projects. Nominated projects are judged on the basis of the project’s degree of difficulty and/or unique or creative use of materials incorporated into the project; the project’s construction duration in relation to its square footage and project type; and overall construction quality.

This is the second time in three years that California Drywall has received the AWCI Excellence in Construction Quality Award. In 2012, the company won it for the Nokia R&D Center for Excellence project in Sunnyvale.

ENR’s national winners were chosen by 16 independent professionals from various regions and sectors based on a variety of criteria including innovation, safety, contribution to the community, aesthetic quality, and workmanship. The national honorees were selected from regional winners of McGraw Hill Construction’s network of Regional Publications. Nearly 7000 projects were submitted for regional awards, yielding 166 regional winners from which the panel chose Best of the Best in 19 categories.

“There were some remarkable submissions,” said Steve Eckstrom, president of California Drywall. “We are extremely honored that our work has been recognized by the ENR judges and our industry peers at AWCI.”

Located in the heart of the Stanford Campus, the 112,000 square foot, state-of-the-art building is a seamless integration of architecture, acoustics and technology. The core of the structure is the 842 seat concert hall, which occupies an oval drum that is encircled by an irregularly shaped lobby. Nestled within 12-inch-thick walls, the oval-shaped hall is designed for optimal acoustics from every seat in the house. The vineyard style configuration creates an intimate concert experience, a warm and rich environment for audience and performers. While the hall is small, the 47-foot high ceiling is nearly as high as concert halls three times its size. Nine large, sculptural, convex-shaped sails surround the seating, defining the hall’s volume, while a double-curved ceiling reflector floats above the stage. These acoustic reflectors are shaped and angled to provide optimal acoustic reflection and absorption.

Bing was a success story of collaboration. The California Drywall team worked with Turner Construction the owner, designers, consultants and other trade partners to overcome construction challenges and meet the quality and precision needed to build a facility that serves as center of the arts community at Stanford.
