In Memoriam: HOK’s Ed McCrary

We’re sad to share the news that Ed McCrary passed away on May 10 after a long illness. Ed joined HOK in 1996, assuming leadership of the San Francisco office after 35 years with SOM. He led HOK’s San Francisco office to an unprecedented era of growth and prosperity. Beginning with his strategy of diversifying markets, the office tripled in size while garnering record profits and a string of award-winning designs. Throughout his 55-year career, Ed was a dedicated member of the AIA and was given the AIA California Chapter’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010.

When Ed retired in December, the San Francisco office established the McCrary Fellowship, a $5,000 professional development grant that will be awarded annually to a San Francisco staff member to pursue continuing education and research related to project management and delivery.

With his stubborn will and blunt charm, Ed won the respect, admiration and affection of those who worked with him. Ed McCrary challenged us to reexamine our potential and, by example, taught us all how to be professionals. He will be missed.

The McCrary family would like charitable donations in Ed’s memory to go to either:
