Co-Founding Principal of Form4 Honored as Only Architect on Upstart 50 List

SAN FRANCISCO: John Marx, AIA, Co-Founding Principal and Chief Artistic Officer of Form4 Architecture, has been honored as a member of the Upstart 50 class of 2017. “Silicon Valley is finally starting to get its own architectural style, and John Marx is a big reason why,” states the award announcement. Marx is the only architect recognized on the list, which honors the most innovative, disruptive, and creative business professionals throughout the Bay Area. This acknowledgement adds to the more than 100 accolades achieved by the firm from 2015 to present, including Form4’s recognition as recipient of this year’s American Prize for Architecture, an award bestowed upon outstanding practitioners of architecture in the United States.

Fifty of the area’s most dynamic and successful individuals were honored as part of the inaugural Upstart 50 by the San Francisco Business Times and Silicon Valley Business Journal, including Shelly Kapoor Collins, Founder of Shatter Fund, which invests solely in women-led businesses; Daniel Lurie, CEO of Tipping Point Community, a non-profit that fights poverty in the Bay Area; and Eric Yuan, CEO of Zoom, an on-demand video conferencing enterprise.

“John is part of a distinguished and diverse group of startup founders, venture capitalists, creative minds, and influencers who we are recognizing for their impact on business—not just through every corner of the Bay Area and Silicon Valley, but far beyond,” says Joshua Jennings Moss, Editor-in-Chief of the Silicon Valley Business Journal.

John Marx is responsible for developing Form4 Architecture’s design vision and philosophical language. He has led projects for nearby Silicon Valley tech giants, such as Netflix, Citrix, VMware, Google, and Facebook, and has an international reach that includes designs in India, Korea, Taiwan, and Ireland. Marx will have a presence in Berlin, Germany, at this year’s World Architecture Festival as a selected panelist, as well as a judge of the “Special Prize: Best Use of Colour” category of the competition. In addition, Marx will introduce keynote speaker Kim Cook, Director of Art & Civic Engagement of the Burning Man arts festival. His first book, Wandering the Garden of Technology and Passion (Balcony Press, 2012), is a study of digital design that explores two decades of his international design work. In 2016, Marx exhibited the firm’s work at the Venice Biennale of Architecture in the Global Art Affairs Foundation exhibition titled “Time-Space-Existence.”

“We trust in work that is artful and dynamic while respectful of its parameters,” says Marx. “To that end, we are able to create architecture that is poetic and memorable without sacrificing function.”

Form4 Architecture believes architecture is the art of giving form to ideas. In 2017, the firm was named winner of the American Prize for Architecture, also known as The Louis H. Sullivan Award, by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. Form4 creates formal expressions that are not only poetically moving and conceptually thoughtful, but also reflective of the client’s values and goals. As collaborative partners in the design process, the principals of Form4 Architecture—Robert J. Giannini, John Marx, AIA, Paul Ferro, AIA, and James Tefend—are personally involved with every project from concept to completion, bringing the collective wealth of years of expertise and knowledge to each client’s vision. Since 1999, the firm has built a rich portfolio of award-winning work for national and international clients within diverse market sectors.
