Mission District Developers Lend Helping Hand to Marshall Elementary School

Public/private partnership gives students new playground (and more) just in time for new school year

SAN FRANCISCO (Sept. 5, 2012) – Students at Marshall Elementary School in San Francisco’s Mission District started the school year with a refurbished playground and garden and a new greenhouse and benches thanks to donations by local developer Avant Housing LLC and contractor Devcon Construction.

Avant Housing and Devcon Construction diverted their attention from construction of a 202-unit mixed-use apartment development at 1880 Mission Street, located near Marshall Elementary, to contribute reconstruction and re-striping of the school’s cracked and rutted playground and new construction of a greenhouse and benches to be used for science studies.

“Supervisor Jane Kim put us together in an ad hoc public/private partnership to provide much needed repairs to our play yard and new outdoor learning facilities,” said Peter Avila, principal at Marshall Elementary. “We are grateful that Avant and Devcon have stepped up to contribute to the Mission community.”

Avant Housing and Devon Construction are mid-way through construction of the 230,000-square-foot, six-story apartment complex on the site of a former printing plant about a half-blockfrom the school.

“We are committed to supporting the students and the school,” said Eric Tao, managing partner, Avant Housing. “We have deep roots in the communities where we develop and we are grateful for leaders like Supervisor Kim and Principal Avila for welcoming us into the Marshall Elementary School community that truly is part of the fabric of our City’s diverse neighborhoods.”

“We strive to be effective corporate citizens in all the neighborhoods in which we work, as good business partners,” said Gary Filizetti, president, Devcon Construction. “We want to support the students and their community.”
