San Francisco – NEMA, a Crescent Heights® Inspired Community on the corner of 10th and Market Streets in San Francisco’s Mid-Market neighborhood, announced today that acclaimed chef, cookbook author and educator Suvir Saran has become its first signed commercial tenant, leasing 8,500 square feet of NEMA’s closely watched 13,500 square feet of ground-level, commercial space. The yet-to-be-named restaurant, Saran’s first venture on the West Coast, is being created specifically for San Franciscans and is slated to open in Spring 2014.
“Suvir Saran is one of New York’s most popular celebrity chefs, and we’re thrilled he chose NEMA and San Francisco to debut his award-winning cuisine on the West Coast,” said Roman Speron, regional operations manager at Crescent Heights. “Suvir and his imaginative yet accessible restaurant will be the perfect complement to the lifestyle NEMA offers. In addition to NEMA residents, San Franciscans and worldly travelers will be able to experience Suvir’s signature cuisine in a lively environment.”
Widely known for his appearances on Bravo’s “Top Chef: Masters” and for his best-selling cookbooks, Saran rose to culinary prominence in New York for his work at Dévi, where he specialized in the flavors of Indian home cooking. Under Saran’s direction, the restaurant became the first Indian restaurant in the U.S. to earn a Michelin Star. Saran left Dévi in March 2012.
Although still early on in conceptualization, Saran plans to create a full-service restaurant and a modern bar and lounge at NEMA, with an innovative and seasonal menu. Guests will also enjoy an inventive cocktail menu and wine list in a sleek, modern and dramatic setting.
Saran’s restaurant and lounge joins an impressive collection of other restaurants and retail slated to open in San Francisco’s rapidly re-emerging Mid-Market area, including Alta CA by Daniel Patterson, TBD Restaurant by Chef Mark Liberman and the AQ team, and The Market, a full-service grocery market located in the Twitter building.
“I can’t begin to express my excitement about launching a restaurant in San Francisco, and in the NEMA building particularly,” said Saran. “The partnership is shaping up to be immensely dynamic, as our teams share compatible styles, passion and drive. NEMA is a one-of-a-kind residential property in the city, and we look forward to introducing our unique concept and contributing to the vibrant renewal of the Mid-Market neighborhood.”
