Oakland Business Districts Continue Economic Expansion

Several New Downtown Oakland & Lake Merritt/Uptown Establishments Are Now Open

Oakland, CA – July 13, 2012 – The past several months have seen further increases in business growth in Oakland’s Downtown and Lake Merritt/Uptown business improvement districts.

“Having a vital retail sector is important for any urban center, and Oakland is no exception,” said Steve Snider, manager of both the Downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt/Uptown Business Improvement Districts. “We look at rebuilding the Uptown and Downtown shopping and restaurant experience as one of the business improvement district’s primary responsibilities. As a result, we’re rebuilding our districts block by block, and business by business because we believe that slow and steady wins the race.”

Snider said that new and notable businesses started in the Districts during the past three months include:

The Downtown Oakland and Lake Merritt/Uptown District Association were formed in February 2009. Property owners in both Downtown Oakland and the Lake Merritt/Uptown Districts voted by a margin of almost 8 to 1 to support a voluntary property tax to fund services that would improve the quality of life in their respective communities. The associations meet and function jointly. Services funded by these Districts include maintaining cleanliness and order in the public rights of way, improving district identity and advocating on behalf of the area’s property owners, business owners and residents.
