Passenger Traffic Grows by 9.1 Percent in February at Silicon Valley’s Airport

San José, Calif. – Passenger traffic increased a healthy 9.1 percent at Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) in February 2014 compared to the same month in 2013, marking 14 consecutive months of year-over-year passenger growth. SJC served 637,824 departing and arriving passengers in February.

The significant increase in passengers is attributed to Southwest Airlines with added frequency to Orange County, and more service to Los Angeles (LAX) on Delta Air Lines and Virgin America with five and four daily flights, respectively. Strong passenger loads on All Nippon Airways’ daily nonstop flight to Tokyo on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner also contributed to the growth.

“It’s gratifying to have passenger growth, even during months that are typically slower for airline travel,” said Director of Aviation Kim Becker Aguirre. “Passenger traffic increased 9.1 percent in both January and February, and we are hopeful this growth trend will continue into spring and summer as several of our airlines plan to add flights.”

Southwest Airlines will add a daily nonstop flight each to Denver, Orange County, San Diego and Seattle beginning April 8. Hawaiian Airlines will resume year-round daily nonstop wide-body service to Honolulu (HNL) on May 16. This flight offers travelers easy connections via HNL to Beijing, China. Delta Air Lines will add four daily nonstop flights to Seattle beginning May 29. Alaska Airlines will launch daily nonstop service to Salt Lake City effective June 12.

Passenger growth is also expected to continue in 2014 as SJC continues its efforts to attract new and expanded air service and due to improving national and local economic conditions.
