San Mateo Named A Top 100 Best Place To Live

San Mateo has been named one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live 2018 by, outpacing more than 2,100 cities (with populations between 20,000 and 350,000) in this data-driven ranking.

The list is an exclusive, independent, editorial ranking by The 2018 ranking builds on a process initially developed with one of the world’s leading urban theorists, Richard Florida.’s research team worked with the University of Toronto’s Martin Prosperity Institute and later with The Initiative for Creativity and Innovation in Cities at New York University’s Schools of Professional Studies a program he directed along with Steven Pedigo.

Situated in a prime spot along San Francisco Bay, San Mateo reflects the economic strength of Silicon Valley while featuring a casual pace of life that attracts many young professionals and families. Top employers include Franklin Templeton Investments and San Mateo Medical Center, and San Mateo’s economy also revolves around technology and retail. The city’s population has grown by five percent over the past 10 years. More than 10,000 students attend College of San Mateo, and volunteerism in the community is high thanks in large part to a city-run Volunteer Source that connects volunteers with organizations, events and programs that need their help.
