Iceland’s largest airline announces plans to launch service in June 2018
SAN FRANCISCO – January 11, 2018 – Icelandair, the largest airline in Iceland, today announced plans to launch nonstop service from Reykjavík to the San Francisco International Airport (SFO) in June 2018. The airline plans to operate between SFO and Keflavík International Airport four times per week, using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.
“We are proud to be the airport of choice for Icelandair’s expansion on the U.S. West Coast,” said SFO Airport Director Ivar C. Satero. “We have a shared passion for making air travel environmentally sustainable, having each set aggressive goals for reduced greenhouse gas emissions and carbon neutrality. Travelers in San Francisco can soon enjoy a great new way to get to Iceland and beyond.”
The new service will be one of a few select routes in the U.S. operated in widebody Boeing 767-300ER aircraft, which feature 25 Saga business class seats, 21 Economy Comfort seats, and 216 Economy seats.
Icelandair traces its roots back 80 years, when Flugfélag Akureyrar was founded on the north coast of Iceland, operating a single floatplane. Today Icelandair is a part of the Icelandair Group, a holding company with 12 subsidiaries focused on the airline and tourism sectors. The Group includes Icelandair, Icelandair Ground Services (IGS), Icelandair Cargo, Iceland Travel, Air Iceland and Icelandair Hotels.
Tourism from the United States to Iceland continues to grow at a rapid pace. In 2015, 242,805 US citizens visited Iceland. By 2016, this figure had grown to 415,287, an annual increase of over 70%.
