Silicon Valley’s Airport Has Record Passenger Increase in December and Overall Healthy Growth for Calendar Year 2013

San José, Calif. – Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) served 772,809 departing and arriving passengers in December 2013, a record 15.4 percent increase compared to December 2012. This is the highest monthly increase SJC has had since 2001, and marks the twelfth consecutive month of year-over-year increased passenger traffic. SJC served 8,783,319 passengers in 2013, for an overall calendar year increase of 5.9 percent.

The significant increase in passengers in December is because the majority of Thanksgiving holiday travelers returned on the first few days of the month. Also, Southwest Airlines scheduled 24 additional flights on December 1, the Sunday following Thanksgiving. Southwest also reported strong passenger loads at SJC during December overall.

Increased passenger activity is also the result of two new airlines joining SJC in 2013. All Nippon Airways now has daily flights to Tokyo on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner after its initial launch in January. Virgin America arrived at SJC in May, and along with Delta Air Lines each added four daily flights to Los Angeles.

“We closed out 2013 with a record 15.4 percent increase in passengers in December. These impressive gains were from those traveling home after Thanksgiving in the first few days of the month, and many others who visited family, friends or vacation destinations during the year-end holidays,” said Director of Aviation Kim Becker Aguirre. “Airport staff has worked hard to offer an efficient and world-class experience for Silicon Valleytravelers, and it’s evident from the 5.9 percent increase in passengers in 2013 that our efforts are paying off.

“We are grateful to so many partners – our airlines, residents and businesses, City public-private leadership and our employees – for supporting SJC and helping us achieve this upward trend in passenger activity during 2013,” Becker Aguirre continued.

The upward trend at SJC is expected to continue into 2014 because of expanded air service choices for Silicon Valley travelers, and an improving local and global economy. Southwest Airlines will add one daily nonstop flight each to Denver, San Diego, Seattle and Orange County beginning April 8. Delta Air Lines will add four daily nonstop flights to Seattle beginning May 29. Alaska Airlines will launch daily nonstop service to Salt Lake City effective June 12.
