Berkeley, CA—ELS Architecture and Urban Design has hired Sean Slater, AIA, LEED AP, to serve as director of retail and urban design, announced D. Jamie Rusin, AIA, principal of ELS and director of the firm’s board. Slater has more than 16 years of experience as an architect and has worked extensively on domestic and international mixed-use developments blending large-format retail with small shops, food services, department stores, civic functions, housing, offices, and hospitality and educational facilities.
Slater has considerable expertise in expanding, renovating, and repositioning retail properties throughout the United States. His clients have included General Growth Properties, Forest City Enterprises, DeBartolo Development, and Trammel Crow Company.
Prior to joining the firm, he was principal of Schroeder Slater, LLC, in Atlanta, where he worked on numerous retail and mixed-use projects, such as North Point Mall in Alpharetta, Georgia, and Atlanta Midtown West and Lindbergh Station, both in Atlanta.
His current projects with ELS include Hillsdale Mall in San Mateo, California; the master plan for Mueller Town Center in Austin, Texas; and University Mall in Provo, Utah.
A registered architect, Slater is a member of the American Institute of Architects, International Council of Shopping Centers, and Urban Land Institute. He received his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin.
