Sacramento, Calif., Oct. 19, 2017 – McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. (McCarthy), an employee-owned construction and general contracting firm, is pleased to announce the completion of Betty Irene Moore Hall at UC Davis. Leaders from UC Davis, the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, UC Davis Health, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and McCarthy recently attended a grand opening celebration and ribbon cutting to commemorate the milestone occasion.

“When the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation chose UC Davis for an innovative school of nursing, we saw a great opportunity to build a new model for educating future health professionals,” UC Davis Chancellor Gary May said. “The whole building is designed to have students facing each other, learning from each other and solving problems together – just as health professionals do on the job.”

To develop the 70,000 square foot, $50 million academic building, the team utilized a Design-Build delivery method, a collaborative process in which one entity – the design-build team, comprised of builder and designer – works under a single contract with the project owner, which involved the School of Nursing and the Facilities Design and Construction teams, to provide optimal design and construction services to best meet the overall project needs. This level of collaboration is reflected throughout the final product, as the facility touts synergistic learning spaces rather than traditional classrooms, including simulation labs where care scenarios play out with adjacent debriefing rooms that provide an environment to discuss bedside decisions in real-time.

Students are encouraged to enhance clinical skills and communicate in the inpatient, eight-bed “hospital ward”, task and anatomy skills labs, a 15-room primary care clinic and a one-bedroom apartment home health simulation suite. Shared spaces, known as learning commons, weave throughout to foster continual exchange between classroom and clinical learning. Also in place are strategically shaped “propeller tables” designed to support engaged learning. Each wing – seating seven students – creates an atmosphere where new ideas are not only heard, but they are discussed, debated and remembered.

“The school’s model of collaboration and teamwork directly mirrors McCarthy’s guiding principles, and our project team employed a similar mindset by working through the design-build process,” said McCarthy’s Project Executive Tim Albiani. “As a result, we have been able to provide an innovative and advanced building that will support 21st century education practices for many decades to come.”

In addition to becoming the primary home for the Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing, Betty Irene Moore Hall will provide much needed resources for interprofessional education within UC Davis Health and the UC Davis School of Medicine. This model allows for students and professionals to learn together and at the same time to help develop skills through collaboration and experience.

At the grand opening event, approximately 800 university, community and project team members were on hand to celebrate the official opening and to tour and test the facilities at an Open House with UC Davis Chancellor Gary May, UC Davis Health Interim Vice Chancellor Thomas Nesbitt and Associate Vice Chancellor for Nursing and School of Nursing Founding Dean Heather M. Young.
