Passenger Traffic Gains for Silicon Valley Airport in May 2013

SAN JOSE – Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) passenger traffic increased 9.5 percent in May 2013 compared to the same month last year. This is the fifth consecutive month of year-over-year increased passenger traffic, for an overall calendar year-to-date increase of 4.7 percent. The increased traffic is due to more air service to the places Silicon Valley travelers want to go and an improving economy.

Passenger traffic began a steady year-over-year increase in January 2013 with 0.9 percent, followed by increases of 1.1 percent in February and 5.4 percent in both March and April.
The upward trend is expected to continue through the current calendar year. This is due to expanded air service choices for Silicon Valley travelers and their ability to travel for business and leisure due to an improving local economy. New airline service includes:

–          Virgin America launched service with four daily flights between SJC and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) on May 1, 2013;

–          All Nippon Airways resumed service between SJC and Narita International Airport in Tokyo on June 1, 2013. ANA operates five weekly nonstop flights on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and will begin daily service on July 10, 2013; and

–          Delta Air Lines began service between SJC and LAX with four daily flights on June 10, 2013. Delta offers four daily nonstop flights to LAX which it previously served from SJC in 2008. The carrier also offers nonstops from SJC to Atlanta, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Salt Lake City.

“We are so pleased that the trend in passenger traffic growth continues at Mineta San José International Airport, and with the impressive year-over-year growth of 9.5 percent in May 2013,” said Director of Aviation Bill Sherry. “It has been three years since we completed the $1.3 billion modernization of our terminals and associated facilities. We are encouraged that airlines and Silicon Valley travelers are finding new reasons every day to choose SJC.”

Silicon Valley travelers and businesses can help SJC in the region’s combined efforts to increase the choices available for flying from SJC by writing to the airlines to tell them where they want to fly!
