RATCLIFF selected for design of $25 million Student Health and Counseling Center at San Jose State University

Emeryville, Calif. – RATCLIFF, providing architecture, master planning, interior design and sustainability consulting services to academic, healthcare and civic clients throughout the Western United States, was recently selected for the design of a new student health and counseling center at San Jose State University.  RATCLIFF is design partner to Blach Construction Company, based in the Silicon Valley, and won the project following a thorough design-build competition that included fully five user review sessions—a high benchmark for any selection process let alone the streamlined design-build method.

Components of the new health and counseling center include expanded support spaces and administrative office suites, exam/screening rooms and ample space for massage, acupuncture, dentistry and optometry programs. The building will house approximately 70 employees and 20 student assistants.

Intensive user input in the review sessions led to the inclusion of a wellness and health lounge that promotes student health with peer and health educators and will feature a “stress free zone” for quiet, private rejuvenation, according to Gary Jerezcek, RATCLIFF project manager.  The three story facility features an open floor plan with flexible “pod” or module planning that allows private offices for physicians and counselors adjacent to open areas for support and administrative services.

The Student Health Center’s modernist design is in keeping with the diverse campus architecture and is well suited to its prominent building site, at the intersection of four campus quadrants where adjacent structures reflect architectural styles of their eras.  “Conceived from one of the major styles developed on campus, the building successfully melds outside and inside by establishing new gathering spaces with sensitive landscaping, façade design and material selections, all the while aligning planning and budget with campus integration as the ultimate goal,”  said Jereczek.

The new facility is being built as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold equivalent project. Sustainable design principles will be implemented, such as optimized energy performance, water efficient landscaping and maximum use of daylight.

Construction begins July 2013 with completion expected in December 2014.  This aggressive design-build schedule reflects fast-track bidding and permitting and, with project delivery methods utilizing BIM technology and rigorous, disciplined, fast-track coordination, will yield substantial savings in cost as well as time.
