San José, Calif. – Mineta San José International Airport (SJC) was recognized as the second fastest growing medium hub US airport for passengers served in 2013 by anna.aero, a leading aviation industry web-based publication, in its annual awards program.
Airline Network News & Analysis (anna.aero), a website dedicated to airline network planning intelligence and news coverage of global airline route launches, recognized SJC for its significant air service growth in 2013 in its 4th US ANNIE Awards program. Silicon Valley’s airport competed in the 5 million to 10 million annual passengers served category. SJC’s passenger traffic increased from 8.3 million in 2012 to 8.8 million in 2013, for an overall calendar year increase of 5.9 percent, and was recognized by anna.aero as the second fastest growing airport in the medium hub category. SJC was the only California airport to be recognized among the 630 US airports evaluated by anna.aero.
Increased passenger activity at SJC in 2013 was due to new international and domestic airline service. Strong passenger loads on All Nippon Airways’ daily nonstop flight to Tokyo on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner contributed to SJC’s growth. Delta Air Lines and Virgin America each launched four daily flights to Los Angeles. Also, Southwest Airlines, SJC’s largest carrier, was an important contributor as it expanded frequency and had strong bookings on existing routes.
“SJC turned the corner for passenger traffic growth in 2013, and it’s gratifying to learn that our 5.9 percent year-over-year increase makes us a leader among other US airports of similar size,” said Director of Aviation Kim Becker Aguirre. “This growth reflects the strength of the Silicon Valley market and the competitive advantages our airport provides to carriers. We would not have achieved this success without the support of our airlines, residents and businesses, employees and public-private leadership, including San José Mayor Chuck Reed and the Airport Competitiveness Committee, Silicon Valley Leadership Group CEO Carl Guardino, and San Jose Silicon Valley Chamber of Commerce CEO Matt Mahood.”
The growth trend is expected to continue into spring and summer as airlines continue to expand service at SJC. Southwest will add a daily nonstop flight each to Denver, Orange County, San Diego and Seattle beginning April 8. Hawaiian Airlines will resume wide-body service to Honolulu, with easy connections to Beijing, China, starting May 16. Delta will add four daily nonstop flights to Seattle on May 29. Alaska Airlines will launch daily nonstop service to Salt Lake City effective June 12.
